Caynham Village, Shropshire

Bishop Hooper C of E School

Caynham School was built in 1834 and has an important place in the history of education in Shropshire. It was one of the first small village schools opened in the county by the National Society, the organisation founded in 1811 to promote education according to the principles of the Church of England.

Caynham was the first school in Shropshire to receive a building grant from the Government following legislation in 1833 that state aid should be made available for education in this way.

The school had variable fortunes during its early years but from 1879 onwards it has provided a sound primary education for children of the south western part of the Caynham parish and of adjoining areas. Under a succession of dedicated and able teachers supported by actively involved managers, Caynham school (which in latter years was to be renamed "Bishop Hooper School") has often been praised for its high standards, both in traditional academic subjects and in the creative Arts. Religious education has always been an important part of its curriculum.

The village hall building was widely used by the school as a classroom/dining room until 2011, when the school was relocated to the nearby village of Ashford Carbonel.

The school has its own comprehensive web site.
